Best Refrigerators for Dorm Rooms – What to Look For

So you are finally almost ready to start your first semester of college. But there is one thing left, you need a small refrigerator. If you live in a dorm room, a compact refrigerator is a must have. It would be hard to get through that first that first semester if you couldn’t keep things cold… like beer, or milk. So what are your options when it comes to buying a compact refrigerator?

Sizes

1. If you need something small, but still big enough to hold a respectable amount of beverages. On the smallest end, you have the 1.7 cu-ft refrigerator. This is suitable for about a 2-liter bottle of soda, a gallon of milk and maybe a 6 pack of soda. If you aren’t planning on storing too much in your fridge, this may be the right choice for you. These can be bought for about $70.

2. Maybe you require your refrigerator to hold a little more. A 3.2 Cu Ft mini fridge might be a better option for you. This size can hold about twice as much as the 1.7 Cu ft refrigerator. This is probably more suitable for the average college student who likes to keep some fruit, left-overs, condiments, and cold beverages in their fridge. Many of these sized appliances also come with a freezer on top. This is a huge advantage over the 1.7 cu-ft regrigerators.

3. On the bigger end, you are in the 4.0 cu-ft range. Most college students wouldn’t want a fridge this size. One reason being, it takes up more space. The other reason, it’s a pain to have to move around, especially if your dorm is located upstairs! For those that have a bigger than normal dorm room, maybe this is something you need. It is a good size fridge to share with a room mate if you want to split the costs.

What about a Freezer?

Remember, the smallest refrigerators do not come with a freezer. Freezers are great to have if you plan on buying foods like meat, or would like to have some ice. Many would sacrifice a little more space and spend a little extra on having a freezer/fridge combo because of the convenience.  However, if you are on a tighter budget, and would simply just like to keep things cold, go for the smaller sized refrigerator.
